On December 28, the Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services (HFS) announced that 90-day rehabilitation stays in a nursing facility setting will be covered for participants of the Health Benefits for Immigrant Adults (HBIA) and Seniors (HBIS) programs.

This is a critically important coverage of long-term care for vulnerable adults and seniors. It is another step toward the shared goal of covering comprehensive healthcare and long term services and supports (LTSS) for all, regardless of age, income, immigration status, or any other factor.

Expanding healthcare and LTSS coverage will keep communities safer and healthier while saving taxpayers money in the long run by avoiding costly emergency room visits. We continue to call on HFS to work collaboratively with advocates and community members to restore and protect the HBIA and HBIS programs while identifying a path to coverage for all.
